Teach kids and students the significance of Republic Day – In the current academic year, schools were shifted to online learning due to coronavirus pandemic. Which inadvertently involved parents to a greater extent with the academic and co-curricular process with school and kids. With the current preparation frenzy of 72nd Indian Republic Day, I asked my child a few questions on the significance of Republic Day.
The 8-year-old had a little idea of Republic Day but not up to the extent that explains its significance and rich history. It was quite surprising that kids often get confused between the two National Days – Independence and Republic. Hence, I decided to explain in detail the significance of Indian Republic Day.
Explain the significance of Indian Republic Day to Kids in simple words.
Meaning of Republic Day for Children –
As kids do not comfortably connect with the jargon and legal lingo, it is better to explain the significance of Republic Day in easy words. On 26th January 1950, our country was declared a Republic. When a nation is called a republic, it means that the country is not under the rule of any other country. To celebrate this important development and commemorate the complete independence of India we celebrate Republic Day every year on 26th January with pride and enthusiasm.
Teach kids the difference between Indian Independence Day and Republic Day
Independence Day is celebrated in the memory of our freedom fighters, soldiers who gave up their lives protecting us and getting us our freedom. On this day, the Prime Minister of India hoists the national flag at the Red Fort and addresses the nation from the ramparts of the Red Fort in New Delhi.
Republic Day is celebrated on January 26th, this day is marked with extravagant parades on the Rajpath, New Delhi to highlight India’s military prowess and cultural diversity. The President of India hoists the National Flag, the Tiranga.
As parents, we should encourage children to watch the live telecast of the Republic Day parade on television. We ensure to start our day early on this National Holiday to watch the parade live. During the live course also explain the significance of Republic Day parade to the kids along with each ceremonial importance and regional tabloids. I remember how parents would give me homework to write Republic Day speech after watching the live telecast of the Parade on Rajpath, New Delhi.
What is the meaning of the Constitution?
Legal words and framework would not interest kids much, rather explain the Constitution in simple words. A constitution is a set of guidelines, basic principles, and laws of a nation. Lawmakers and the government use these rules/guidelines to make our country work.
Trivia for Kids on Indian Constitution – The Indian constitution is the longest-written constitution including 448 articles.
Our Indian constitution is written by Dr. B. R. Ambedkar who is also known as the Father of the Indian Constitution and Babasaheb.
How is Republic Day Celebrated?
On Republic Day, a grand parade is organized at Rajpath in New Delhi. The parade is witnessed by the Indians globally with pride and glory. It represents the ‘unity in diversity’ of India.
An extravagant show of military prowess, regional tabloids represent their cultural heritage and diversity. As spectators, we get a view of our country’s technical advancements along with diverse cultural developments.

On this day, we also remember our freedom fighters and valiant soldiers who laid down their lives for our safety. National awards for bravery such as the Paramvir Chakra, Ashok Chakra, and Vir Chakra are awarded to brave soldiers posthumously (after death).
Brave children also receive appreciation and bravery medals from the President of the country. The National Bravery Awards are a set of awards given annually to about 25 Indian children below 16 years of age for “meritorious acts of bravery against all odds.”
Importance of Republic Day Speech for Kids
Republic Day speech – the most common practice across out great country. The day starts with speech from the President to school principals delivering high octane speeches. Children also get the chance to prepare and present Republic day speech on 26th January.
In a way Republic Day is not less than a festival for Indians, it is a National Holiday but we shouldn’t just spend it as any weekend off. Instead, take time and explain to kids the importance of Republic Day to kids. We can also ask them to write a Republic Day Speech for kids to see their understanding of the occasion.
We should instill the importance of freedom and constitution among kids by easy to understand speech and essays on Republic Day.
For example – tell them the reason why Republic Day is special. It reminds us of the real struggle of our late freedom fighters to achieve the ‘Purn Swaraj’. The struggle for freedom was based on some high principles and ideas, such as – non-violence, cooperation, non-discrimination, etc.
On the occasion of Republic Day tell the names of our great freedom fighters and the stories of their valor with children. Sardar Bhagat Singh, Rajguru, Rani Lakshmi Bai, Subhash Chandra Bose, Sarojini Naidu, and many more.
We must and should preserve our heritage and pass on the lessons from the past to future generations. On this note, I would like to wish every Indian, Happy Republic Day.
