If you are reading this, maybe browsing Birmingham homes for sale or getting lost in southern recipes has you curious about what life in the south might be like. Maybe you’ve been a Yankee all your life or only know the west coast as home. If you are either of those, a little change might be all you need for life to feel brand new once again.
With the United States being as grand as it is, there’s no shock for anyone when they realize how different the various regions can be. If you aren’t too sure of what life might be like for someone considering a move down south, here’s a little insight for you.
The Weather
How you view the climate down south is going to be based around where you’ve lived your life so far and what you think about it. If you are coming from the northeast and love the climate there, the humidity and higher temperatures are sure going to be a con if you are starting a new life in the south.
On the other hand, still looking at the perspective of someone from the northeast, it’s very possible you are absolutely done with the bitter cold and all the issues that come with it. From shoveling that seems to get more annoying each year to all the traffic issues it causes, winter is sure going to be a bit different down south than how you’ve known it.
The Food
Oh boy, this is absolutely going to be in the pro column no matter who you are asking. What southern comfort food exactly looks like its going to vary from state to state, or even more like from city to city, but know that wherever you end up you’ll be in for an unforgettable treat.
From biscuits and gravy to every different kind of barbecue you can imagine, no matter how you love to eat, everywhere throughout the south is sure to have an amazing spin on your favorite dishes.
The Quiet
Here’s another thing that’s going to be either a pro or a con depending on where you come from and what you are expecting out of a move down south. Depending on where you are from, think both New York City and much of New York state, things are quick to feel a little congested. If you are sick of that, a lot of the south is going to feel a lot less busy compared to what you’ve known.
There are plenty of areas where you might have to drive 20 minutes just to get your milk for the week. If you’ve lived a busy life, it’s easy for that to sound like heaven but there’s more to think about when it comes to having a little quiet in your life.
Given you are still working, being in all that quiet is likely going to also mean there are fewer jobs or fewer places to take the family out during weeknights and for weekend day trips. If you are looking for a partner, it might also be a little hard when there are sure to be fewer people around than you are used to.

A friend of mine is moving to Birmingham in a few months’ time and he has already started looking for real estate to invest there. Sharing this with him.
You had me at food! LOL My family is from Mississippi and man oh man the food is fantastic.
Good thing that food is always on the pro haha. Love to explore and try new recipes. This would be fun haha
If south is also Miami, I know something about that… LOL
Gladly
Being from Georgia I can totally relate to your post. I just love this area especially the food.
Thank you for agreeing.
Basic need; food and shelter 🥳 but we agree on most things tou have shared…nice one!
Glad you agree, thank you.
The weather is a major bonus for me, I don’t think I could have pulled the “cold” states for more or less permanent residence. Food is important as well, the more on south you are, the better veggies are generally
The food of the South is something that would attract. So much rich cuisine and tastes! I love it!
Weather and food are the biggest factors for me! I’m not fond of colder weather that much but living in Canada makes me appreciate it more. I’m pretty sure I’d enjoy Birmingham either way 🙂
