“Dr. Rohan, you have a conference at the townhouse with the health and welfare minister today at 4:00 p.m. Also, I have sorted your mailbox. You have received 27 critical inquiries and 107 pro-bono requests for this week. Out of these 27 files, 8 are very critical. The details are in your review folder. The other cases have been arranged in order as you requested.” Mila informed her boss, who was engrossed in reading a case file referred by the hospital’s director himself.
She stood at the threshold, looking at the man occupying the lone couch at the corner of the consultation room.
“Please tell me you went home yesterday night, Doctor, or else I have to report you to the HR for jeopardising the patient’s life!” she said in a warning tone, wielding her concern.
This got his attention from the file in his hands to the looming figure of a tall woman with olive skin, honey-blonde hair, and sharp features. Mila is in her late thirties, but her tone and mannerisms are those of a strict disciplinarian at times. Especially when her boss needs one.
Dr. Rohan Bakshi, a world-renowned and most sought-after robotic neurosurgeon who specializes in handling the highly critical, terminal medical cases from across the globe.
His name and work are well endowed with credentials that need no introduction; his robotic neurosurgeries are referred to in national/international medical schools and colleges as case studies and are neuroscience’s research holy grail. Dr. Rohan has achieved a 99% success rate for his excellence with robotic surgeries and is best known for saving the lives of those who have been deemed hopeless cases from across the country/globe.
“Mila, what would I do without you! You are the best,” he replied with a forced smile.
This got a raised eyebrow from his assistant of 8 years, “Really, that’s your defence for not taking a night off, Doc? Are you seriously crazy, 36 hours without sleep? You are a human and not a robot yourself.” Mila has seen how deeply involved and passionate Dr. Rohan is in his field of work. Missing meals, lack of sleep, and zero to minimal involvement in staff meetings are very common with her boss.
Dr. Rohan couldn’t lie to Mila, even if he tried. His disheveled clothes, dark under eyes, and empty protein bar wrappers on the coffee table were enough to rest his case.
“All I am saying is, take rest and time off when required. You need it to reboot that mind of yours. What if your brain stops braining during the surgery?” She asked with a legitimate concern.
This earned her a chuckle from her boss, “You are spending too much time on social media, ‘braining’, Mila, like seriously! And don’t worry, my brain will keep ‘braining’ even if I am stoned to sleep. It actually never stops, unless you are 6 feet under the earth.”
“Yeah, yeah, whatever you say. You are the boss and sign my paycheques. By the way, before I forget, you have received a personal email with ‘URGENT’ in bold from Dr. Mathani while you were in the surgery late yesterday evening. Could you please connect with him while I fix some food and a change of clothes for you?” Mila said while crumpling empty wrappers from the small coffee table.
Mila has been working with Dr. Rohan for almost a decade; he is one of the most considerate bosses she has ever worked with. Despite being the best in the trade, he is humble, grounded, and kind in his approach with others. He treats everyone equally and never makes her feel anything less than any other higher-ranked staff in the hospital.
“Thank you, Madam, I shall do that now,” he responded and left her to do what’s needed to make him look presentable for his upcoming meeting with the top-notch health officials from the government and health department.
He is a respected member of the health and welfare committee selected by the government to speak at the quarterly public conference, along with other influential people from the domain. People and media love what he says due to his dominance and prowess in AI in the medicine field, philanthropy, and academia.
A young Indian-American neurosurgeon who slowly became the most recommended name in the field. Philanthropist, a rich, well-connected, handsome bachelor that every charity group wants to be associated with. Media’s favourite speaker with a charming personality and good looks, a sense of humor that brightens even the most boring medical press conferences with serious-looking faces and words.
