Gemmological programmes cover a wide variety of gemstones, including diamonds, rubies, sapphires, emeralds, pearls and more.
Back in the day, the Indian jewellery industry thrived under a family-centric structure, where the expertise and traditions of the trade were passed down through generations. Younger individuals would often acquire the necessary skills and knowledge on the job. But that has changed in the last few decades as jewellery companies are hiring experts to bring a fresh outlook and expertise.
Today, we have gem and jewellery experts in the trade, right from sourcing, manufacturing, and selling. The industry has grown in leaps and bounds, and it has become more process-driven and performance-oriented. So, are you planning to become a part of the Indian gem and jewellery industry?
What is Gemmology?
A gemstone is a naturally occurring material that is cut and polished by expert craftsmen and is used in making jewellery or other adornments.
The art of studying such gemstones is what is known as gemmology. As the name suggests, a gemmologist is a professional who is capable of identifying and describing gems based on their various characteristics, such as pleochroism, refractive index, dispersion, specific gravity, luster, hardness, and cleavage fracture. For instance, while an untrained individual may mistake a red gemstone for a ruby, a gemmologist can discern its identity by observing how light interacts with the gem.
By observing the phenomenon of double refraction in rubies, where light splits into distinct orangey-red and violet-red colours, gemmologists can distinguish them from other red gemstones like red spinels and garnets, which maintain a consistent colour regardless of direction. These crucial concepts, among others, form the fundamental aspects covered in the comprehensive study of gemmology.
There are plenty of career opportunities available for people interested in gems – they could try their luck in several areas within the gem and jewellery industry.
