Om Puri passes away at 66 after a massive heart stroke! This news is flashing across all Indian News channels and social media is buzzing with his commendable work and achievements. I grew up watching weekly Sunday movies on our humble patient ever consistent Doordarshan Channel….desh ka pehle entertainment channel without masala.

If you are 80’s born, you can relate to these names same as me… Om Puri, Fahrookh Shaikh, Amol Palekar, Smita Patil, Shabana Azmi, Zarina Wahab, Naseeruddin Shah are some of most talked and watched actors of my growing up days.

Even though I was much younger around that time to understand their legacy and work, but somehow that cinema left a mark on my heart & soul.

When I read this news of Om Puri’s demise was shocked, appalled…His work is a milestone for many many art institutes, budding actors consider him as God! he has scores of achievements under his name…not only in Indian Film Industry he also represented Indian Actors in Hollywood, and these roles are worth talking about. Maqbool, Ardh-Satya, Mirch Masala, Tamas are just few pieces of his exemplary work.

For his outstanding work he was awarded by India’s fourth highest civilian award: Padam Shri.

All through his life he worked worked and worked….he gained such high esteemed image as India’s finest actors but controversies were never far from him; be it The Om Puri’s Story written by his estranged wife or Uri’s Indian Army loose comment he had gone through all this. His remarks on Uri on a talk show created so much controversy that he even had to publicly apologize for his emotional outburst.

From Aakrosh to Ardh-Satya from Maachis to the City of Joy he gave his best to all the classes of society. He will be missed by the movie curators who loved parallel cinema. Take some time out to watch some of his classics… He left a deep rift in the hearts of film fanatics like me who love art more than entertainment.

May your Soul Rest In Peace Mr. OM PURI.
