Saree/Sari – a nine yard love! this is one garment which you cannot ignore regardless of gender, religion, ethnicity, geographic, demographic or any reason for that matter. As they say you love it/you hate it, but can’t ignore it 🙂
I think the saree makes a women looks sexy yet graceful all at the same time – Gauri Khan
My affair with SAREE began very early in life, mom used to bring out all her heavy silk treasures and let me pick one for her to be worn on special occasions – festivals/parties/functions. I remember her peacock green coloured banarsi silk drape that was my all time favourites. Today I see the same affection for this garment in eyes of my little girl, she loves it when I drape 9 yards of Culture weaved by LOVE to embark a Fashion statement. But thankfully I don’t have to go through the drilling experience of ‘buying a saree‘ spree for hours in markets, all I do is just click, click, click and yes my favourite drape comes to the door via Online Shopping.
Over the years these beautiful yards of femininity has transformed from a basic garment in-to a sensuous, glamorous, all time wear, even corporate-wear avatars. And gladly today with fast moving fashion adaptability and technology finding a best suited style or garment is not very troublesome at all.
This is one such versatile garment which can be worn in many different styles to give a unique look to your fashion statement. To my surprise it can be draped in more than 80 different styles, and each has it’s own identity and history! Beautiful isn’t it?
My mother and mother-in-law both are blessed with huge collections of saris ranging from daily wear to specials & very specials, and I did not feel guilty at all for grabbing the best ones from the lot 😉 I have a decent enough collection starting from work related sari to evening ones or heavy silk banarsis to embroidered zardosis.
The draping styles have names based on regions in India like – Nauvari of Maharashtra, Seedha Pallu of Gujarat, Mekhela from Assam, Coorgi style from Karanataka’s Coorg, Madisaru from Tamil Nadu, Mohiniattam of Kerela and many more. If we have Banarsi and Kanjeevaram famous for their grandeur, Tant & Chenderi are known for the ethnic/earthy weaves. Every occasion calls for a special drape, like for Hindu marriage ceremony in Northern part of India has red or associated colours worn for weddings and bright yellow & red dots saree for agni-phere (rounds around holy fire to solemnize wedding rituals)
